Grace’s Beloved Community Committee presents an evening with the Let Freedom Ring Foundation, a nonprofit formed to support the First Baptist Church of Williamsburg. First Baptist is one of the first Black congregations in the nation, and traces its roots to enslaved and free Blacks who met in secret during the time of the Revolution. The foundation’s mission is to protect and preserve the historical prominence of the church and all its artifacts, including the original brick church. That church was acquired and demolished in 1956 by Colonial Williamsburg in order to expand their parking area. In 2020, Let Freedom Ring persuaded Colonial Williamsburg that “history half told is untold,” and urged them to excavate the parking lot, restore the historic church and fully tell the story of the Black Americans who lived here in colonial times. All are welcome to attend this important presentation about the history of where we live.
